Sailing cruises from Martinique

What could be better than discovering new destinations by sea on a sailing cruise?

Martinique is an idyllic location for sailing cruises, but it’s also a starting point for boat cruises to other destinations.

In addition to cruising around the island, there are 2 flagship destinations from Martinique: the Grenadines and the Guadeloupe archipelago.

Sailing around Martinique :

The island of Martinique is a must for a sailing cruise.

We recommend that you plan a one-week tour to give yourself enough time to enjoy the idyllic anchorages.

Don’t have a week to spare? You can also take a day trip to Martinique.

The itinerary around Martinique is full of heavenly anchorages.

On Martinique’s Atlantic coast, you’ll find anchorages just as beautiful as those in the Grenadines, but much less crowded.

These include the Baie des Anglais, the cul de sac Petite Grenade, the îlets du François and its famous Baignoire de Joséphine, the unmissable îlets du Robert and the magnificent and mysterious Baie du Trésor.

Please note that some of these anchorages are regulated, so it’s important to get the right information! (cf: Martinique nautical guide).

The Caribbean coast offers more popular anchorages, such as those at Le Carbet, Saint-Pierre and Les Trois-Ilets, particularly those at Anse Dufour and Anse Noire.

Passing close to the mythical Diamant rock is an awe-inspiring experience, especially as it is home to many species of birds that nest on its cliffs. These include the tailed strawbird.

The anchorage opposite the town of Sainte Anne is often the last and busiest anchorage before returning to Le Marin marina.

Sailing cruises to the Grenadines :

The most popular destination for sailing cruises from Martinique is the Grenadines.

It’s an archipelago of some thirty islands in the Caribbean Sea, grouped between Grenada and St. Vincent and the Grenadines.

To visit this archipelago, we recommend a minimum of 7 days; 10 being the ideal length of time.

You can also sail on a catamaran or monohull. We recommend that you be accompanied by an experienced skipper who knows the area well, but you can also hire your own boat so that you can cruise at your own pace.

This cruise of just a few days will enable you to discover a natural environment still relatively unspoilt by man, although the anchorages are very busy in high season.

Several ports of call are available, including Admiralty Bay and Tobago Cays.

The Grenadines are also known for the island of Petit Tabac, where one of the scenes in the famous Pirates of the Caribbean movie was filmed.

For administrative purposes, only a valid passport is required.

Sailing cruises to Guadeloupe :

The second destination is the island of Guadeloupe.

It’s a famous island in the French West Indies, close to Martinique.

As with the Grenadines, it’s possible to get there by sailing, either on a monohull or a catamaran.

The tour proposed by the operators is relatively the same. It includes several stops on different islands along the way. The first stop is at Saint Pierre in Martinique, before sailing on to Dominica and more precisely to Roseau, the capital. After a short stop in Portsmouth Bay, we head for the Saintes archipelago and Marie Galante, before docking at Pointe à Pitre and more precisely at Le Gosier to enjoy the riches of Guadeloupe.

Itineraries can last between 7 and 10 days, depending on the ports of call chosen.

Finally, for French citizens, there are no administrative formalities in Guadeloupe. However, a passport is required for entry into Dominica.

Where to rent a boat in Martinique? :

Sailing boat rentals are available from the marina at Le Marin, in the south of Martinique. There you’ll find both large rental agencies and smaller structures with just a few boats, including some more unusual ones like the TS50 for fast sailing enthusiasts.

The peak season for boat rentals is from December to April, and there can be a lot of demand, so remember to book well in advance. We recommend at least 6 months in advance.

These cruises are well known from Martinique, but there’s nothing to stop you from touring the island first and exploring the beautiful anchorages.
